Beautiful Story on Material Attachments

Because of lack of transcendental knowledge, one is thinking, “Oh because of Krishna Consciousness, I will give up some happiness, like going to the movies at night.” Some kind of attachment is there.

There is a story about Sanatana Goswami’s servant. He asked Sanatana Goswami, “There is a party going on in the forest…there is a big festival. Could I go and participate?”

Sanatana Goswami said, “Festival?…in the middle of the night???…I don’t think you should go there.”

“No, no, no, they are having a good time….”

“All right if you want to go, what can I say? You go, but no eating whatever they give you. Whatever they give you to eat, you just wrap it up and bring it back here.”

So the devotee went to the festival in the forest and they sat him down, “Please take some food.”

They gave him some nice preparations… some rice and so many things, but he wrapped it all up in his cloth, didn’t take it, and he went back to the Ashrama and took rest.

Next morning, Srila Sanatana Goswami asked, “How was the festival?”

“Oh, it was quite interesting. Everyone was having a good time.”

“Did they give you anything to eat?”

He said, “Yes, but I didn’t eat it. I kept it in my cloth.”

“Bring your cloth. Let me see what they gave you. I am sure it has got some nice preparation.”

So he brought it and when they opened the pot, instead of all the nice delicacies he had seen the night before, there was bones, and rotten flesh, and pus and blood, stool and all kinds of horrible things.

“Oh, what is this?”

“Those were ghosts having a ghost festival. They had transformed all these horrible things to make it seem like nice things. If you had eaten…oof!”

Then when the servant realized that, he said, “Oh, how did you know?”

“Who has a festival in the middle of the night, in the middle of the forest?”

So the spiritual master could understand, but the disciple was still attached to some material things. Once he has the knowledge, “Oof! Look at this horrible stuff!” Then naturally you get some detachment.”

Questions & Answers on Krishna-Bhakti .

Question – 1
Why some people are preaching about Krishna , voluntarily ?. God is available to everyone . So, what is the need of preaching ?.

Answer
Krishna- devotee is concerned to enlighten people in general by teaching them to engage in the devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna . This is his kindness . The Devotee knows that those who do not take to devotional will remain suffering due to `Maya' (illusion) . Therefore, he , preaches, "Become Krishna-Devotee . Do not remain asleep in the clutches of `Maya' or illusion . Human life is meant for God-realization." This is the mission of a Krishna-devotee. He wants to save everyone from their suffering condition. He is not content to merely be saved himself. No. He wants to save all others .

While engaged in spreading Krishna-bhakti , he faces many opposing elements . Therefore he has to be very tolerant . Sometimes he is very much mistreated, because the conditioned souls are generally not prepared to receive spiritual knowledge. In fact, they can't stand it . This is their diseased condition . The Devotee accepts the thankless task of trying to awaken them and sometimes must face even violence for his humble effort to do the highest good for all others . Jesus Christ was crucified and Haridas Thakur was severely beaten in twenty-two marketplaces because they tried to awaken the dormant love of God in the hearts of the conditioned souls .

Because the devotee so selflessly executes the mission of Lord Sri Krishna by trying to spread Krishna-bhakti all over the world, he is very, very dear to Lord . If we can follow in the advices of such Krishna-Devotees our perfection will be assured .

Question – 2
Is Okay to Enjoy the Good Things in Life ?...

In the last couple of days, Krishna has drawn me more closer to Him and He is showering His merciful blessings on me so that I am trying to realize the purpose of this birth and am trying to awaken the dormant Krishna-bhakti in me .

Last couple of days, I have been completely absorbed in thinking about Krishna, listening to Krishna kirtans , reading Bhagavad-Gita , apart from my professional work time. Last two days even after returning home, I have not seen TV neither have I listened to radio. I perform `arati' in my puja room and then again immerse myself in reading Bhagavad-Gita .

Today a thought aroused in me while I was reading the Bhagavad-Gita . There are so many good things in this world like good soul-stirring music, good and informative television programs and other magazines, good scenic sights, good vegetarian food etc . Is it that I should not even enjoy these good things and refrain from everything and direct all our energies towards Krishna or is it that I should be away from evil deeds and be a good devotee of Krishna ?

If I am not supposed to do anything else except always be thinking and praying to Krishna, why has Krishna created so many things for the living entity to experience and enjoy ? Why has Krishna allowed me to go away from Him and not made me on the right path, the path of Krishna-bhakti always ? Why has Krishna placed me at a certain economic level so that I have to work and not focus 24 hours on Krishna ? I have read in the Bhagavad-Gita that Krishna wants all His living entities to make devotion to Him and that He is very much pleased if a devotee pleases His senses rather than one's own senses . If this being the case why is Krishna testing the living entities ? Why can't He make us please Him directly ? He is the most merciful, ever attractive, all opulent and controller of all senses .

True Devotees Attention is Only on God

Gist: However you are, God loves you. God cannot be attained by abilities, only by our deep longing and calling out to Him. Do not pay attention to yourself. A true and great devotee's attention is only on God.

True Devotees Attention is Only on God

Question: How can we become more deserving to receive His grace?
A child is carefree about how he is. However he is, whether good or bad, his mother will love him. It is the same with God. If He loved us only if we were good, only if we were perfect, then how can He be called merciful or compassionate? If we have money then only someone will give us a thing, then what is the big deal about what they are doing? However a child is, even if he is covered in dirt, he feels he rightfully belongs to his mother and places his filthy self on the mother's lap and the mother ever if dressed in new, clean clothes simply takes him in her lap.

The main point is that if by our abilities we can attain God, then in His attainment, we have to have abilities greater than Him. This is not possible. All that a child can do is cry to gain his mother's attention. He cannot become deserving of her love. Therefore, why to ask about becoming deserving? Why not simply ask for God? Why go around about way that is a longer path? Why not go straight to the source?

A crucial point is, do not pay attention to yourself. Only pay attention towards God. The minute you look towards yourself, you will fall. The true and greatest devotees attention is only on God. "Hari bina rahyo re ne jai." He cannot live without God. Therefore remember Him at all times and become intensely agitated when you forget Him.
