Benefit of katha-satsang

There is a story. There was a group of robbers. Of them, the oldest one used to tell everyone that "brother, do not go where there is "katha-satsang" (association of holy men and sharing of divine tales of the Lord) taking place, or else your work will stop. If you are going somewhere and on the way if "katha" is taking place, then simply close your ears. Do not listen at all." Such was the training that was imparted to the robbers. One day a robber was going somewhere when on the way a lecture of a holy person was going on. That was the only road leading to where he was headed. While passing by, he shut his ears tight. While walking suddenly, a thorn pierced his foot. With one hand he removed the thorn, and once again began to walk. While removing the thorn, he heard a sentence from the satsang that deities (devatas) do not have a shadow.

One day the robbers raided the king's treasure. The king's soldiers went in search of the thieves. The robbers used to pray to the divine mother. One of the secret agents of the king, disguised himself as a divine mother, stood in place of the deity of the divine mother. When the robbers reached the temple, the divine mother said to the robbers. You have stolen so much treasure but you have not offered anything to me! I will destroy all of you. By hearing this all the robbers became scared and began to ask for forgiveness. They all said we will surely pray. Now they lit the lamp and the incense, and began to do "aarti". The robber who had heard the one sentence during the katha that deities do not have a shadow , he said that this one is not a divine mother (devi). There is no shadow of a divine mother, but this one has a shadow! Instantly on hearing this, the robbers got hold of the secret agent who was disguised as a divine mother and unveiled his true identity. They said, you are the thief, not us? We have not stolen anything. The secret agent fled from there. Even on listening to one sentence of satsang, there can be a change.

A feeling of my very own (apnapan) with God

If you do a job, you will get wages according to your abilities. But if you go home to your mother, will she give you food according to your capabilities? She will give you food whether you work or don't work. In this manner, it is not that by "bhajan" (adoration and worship) a relationship is developed with Bhagwaan, and by not doing "bhajan" there will not be a relationship. If you accept that "mine-ness" , a feeling of my very own (apnapan) with God, that He Naath! I am your child only, then God will think, that however he is, he is mine very own child only, and God will have to take care of you. Therefore, "I am yours only, and only You are mine," this is a very straight-forward path.

The one desiring service will become unhappy. But one who serves remains ever happy, ever joyful. God says that this "jeev" is a part of me alone, but it attracts the body, senses, mind, intellect, that are established in Nature (Prakriti), and assumes them to be his own (Gita 15/7)! O' what business are you getting involved in? Look where you are from, and where you are getting entangled in ! Serve the world. Give happiness to others with your body, mind, wealth, intellect, abilities, rights, etc., but do not consider them to be your own. This feeling of my very own will not last. They are ours only for serving. All the things in this world that we assume to be our own, they alone bind us, and make us dependent. It is a false notion that this entire family is mine, this wealth is mine, but as such they are not! you have accepted them as yours. You have become dependent and subordinate to them. Neither will these stay with you, nor will you stay with them. Therefore with great enthusiasm and eagerness serve them, then the world will also be happy, and God too will be happy. You too remain happy and rejoice at all times. When there is no one available to serve, then the one desiring service will become unhappy. But one who serves remains ever happy, ever joyful.

Changed of "Mine-ness" with God

Changed of "Mine-ness" with God

There was a great loving devotee of God. Day and night, he was immersed in adoration and worship of God. Someone made a long hat for him. Wearing that in a very joyful spirit, he was chanting the Lord's name. He was so deeply immersed in love of God that God Himself came and sat next to him and said – you have worn a very tall hat today! This hat belongs to me, it does not belong to any other. God said – are you being arrogant! He said, I have not begged for it, it is mine. God asked – do you know me? Yes! I know you very well.
God said can you sell this hat? The man said - do you have anything to give me in return, as you are asking to buy from me? You only have the three world, what else do you have to give? God said - So arrogant!!! The man replied, Will it be on loan or what? God said - I will tell the world, you are not a devotee, and the world will stop believing in you. He said, you may most certainly do so, and I too will tell everyone that God is nothing. Your fame has been only due to us, or else who would know about you? Eventually, God accepted His defeat!

We are to only consider God as our very own. We are to serve God, but we are not to take anything from even God. The love that is there in a mother's heart, that much love is not there in the child. Similarly there is immeasurable love in God's heart. He cannot curb his love, his affection, his fondness, and he accepts defeat! "Aur sab so gaye jeet bhagatse haaryo." What an extraordinary point this is! Similarly, become God's. Our relationship is only to serve others. We are not to accept them as our own.

Your daughter changed her sense of "I-ness"as she now accepts herself as the wife of another household. Do you not have even that much capability as your daughter? You were not upset with your daughter when she changed her "I-ness", then the world too will not be upset with you if you change your sense of I-ness to I am God's, as it is the Truth. Meerabai said - "Mere toh Giridhar Gopal, doosero na koyi." No one else is mine, besides Giridhar Gopal and I belong to no one else.

The Lord sees the intentions and motivations of a person

Many people say that  -  "When you repeat the Divine Name of the Lord then is your mind  remaining engaged or not? They say - if the mind is not engaged then you have no gains in this.  The people who say such things are naïve.    They are making a mistake.  They do not really know;  because they have never quite recited the Name of the Lord and seen for themselves.   Has such a thing ever been possible that first the mind should be engaged and then we will do "japa"  (divine name repetition)?   Or will it ever be possible?   Is there such likelihood?  It is not possible that first the mind will be engaged and then we will do "Ram Ram" i.e. repeat the divine name of the Lord.   The mind will become engaged while repeating the Lord's name,  by His grace. "Hari se laagaa raho bhai,  teri bigadi baat ban jaayi Ramjise laagaa raho bhai."  Therefore one must take refuge of the Divine Name.  Initially start with "Ram Ram"  with the mouth and tongue, and do not be concerned about the mind.   "Do not be concerned"  - this does not means that don't engage the mind.  It means that whether our mind gets engaged or not,  do not be fearful that our Japa is not taking place.   It is not so!  Japa is definitely happening,  simply keep continuing.   We have heard -

"Mala to karamein phire,  jeebh phire mukh maahim |
Manavaan to chahun disi phire,  yeh to sumiran naahin ||

Where is it written that worship and devotion of the Lord will not happen?   It is written "sumiran naahi".  If the mind continues to dwell in worldly matters, then how can "sumiran" prayer of the Lord be taking ?   Yes!   Prayer and remembrance of the Lord takes place through the mind,  but where does it say that "this is not japa"?    Japa has taken place.   If repetition of the Lord's name is taking place merely by the tongue and mouth, then "japa"  has taken place.

A saint was saying that establish a relationship with Paramatma in whatever and whichever way.  Whether it be through knowledge or through the mind-intellect. Then what to speak of that!!!  And if not, then simply by the mouth and tongue – simply by calling out the Lord's name "Ram"  establish a relationship, then all will be alright.   "anicchayaa hi sansprushtho dahatyeva hi paavakah"  -  If you touch the fire even without the mind realizing, then too it will inevitably burn, similarly,  any which way, you must take the name of the Lord-
Bhai kubhaaya anakh aalasahun |
Naam japat mangal disi dasahun ||  (Manas,  Bala.   28/1)

One must not take the wrong meaning of this that we can take the name of the Lord with even bad sentiments and we do not even need to engage the mind in the Lord.  Make the effort to absorb the mind in the Lord,  remain careful and alert,  connect the mind with the Lord,  think of the Lord,  but if it does not happen, then do not fear at all.   What I am trying to say is that do not think that if the mind was unable to engage in the Lord then our Japa has been useless and a waste.  If the mind does not engage right now,  do not be concerned;  because when your intent and direction is to engage the mind, then surely it will be engaged.

One thing is that we do not engage the mind and another is that the mind does not get engaged.    There is a big difference between these two states.   In outwardly appearance it seems to be the same, because in both these states the mind is not engaged.   While the situation is the same; but though being the same, there is a big difference.  He who does not even try to engage the mind,  his intent and aim is also not to engage the mind.   He has no thoughts of engaging the mind.   The other person wants to engage the mind in the Lord,  but the mind does not do so.  The Lord sees to the inner feelings of everyone's heart –

Rahati na prabhu chit chuk kiye ki
Karata surati saya baar hiyeki ||  (Manas,  Bala.  29/5)

Lord sees what is in his heart, that he wants to engage the mind but the mind is not engaging.   Then O'  King!  there will be great merit to this.  There will be much affect and influence on the Lord.  The Lord sees the intentions and motivations of a person.  We must make an effort to engage the mind, but if it does not happen then do not be afraid, and continue to take the Divine Name of the Lord.
Ram !  Ram !! Ram  !!!

The Miracle Of The Word

The Miracle Of The Word

Such is the importance of Nam simran in Sikhism that Guru Nanak, the founder of the faith, proclaims, “I have no miracles except the name of God.” Nam japna or Nam simran is the repetitive remembrance of the Supreme, the Satnam, the only true Word. Nam is the Ultimate reality which manifests itself in the form of Creation and Nam, like Nature, is all-pervasive.
Nam is not name, identification or combination of words to address God like Hari, Ram, Allah; it is more than that. Nam is the representation of the Almighty, manifestation of His attributes. Nam is expression for the whole nature of Akal Purakh, the timeless, infinite and all-pervasive. To be linked with the divine name is to grow in likeness to God – being merciful, compassionate and loving until it results in divine union.
Satnam is not eternal silence; it takes the form of the divine Word, Vaheguru, the divine light, dispeller of darkness. In Sikh tradition, the Supreme is referred to as Vaheguru. Absorption in Nam, constant remembrance of Vaheguru, is recommended. As the believer meditates on the Word, bondage to the world, fear and injustice is overcome. Nam simran has the power of freeing us from the self-centredness that leads to endless cycles of reincarnation. All gains, spiritual and material, flow from concentration on Nam. Nam simran, chanting of ‘Satnam Vaheguru’ in congregation or in solitude is one of the three cardinal principles of Sikhism, along with kirat karni or honest labour and vand chhakna or sharing with the needy.
Nam japna can be performed at the individual level, in private meditation. It involves the practice of repeating the sacred word which helps you internalise the meaning of the Word. Guru Nanak believed that by repetition of Nam, one can overcome the ego. Nama marga, the path of the divine Word, is the way to liberation.
Nam simran can also be performed collectively in sadhsangat, when devotees sing together hymns of praise or the shabad in the form of kirtan. Guru Nanak says satsangat is where the divine Nam is cherished. This is where virtues are learnt, where godlike qualities are cultivated. In sangat devotees seek unity with God through recitation of Bani as well as hearing His Word. Nam simran is related to hearing or listening to the Word as well as becoming aware of what has been heard.
Remembrance of Nam does not bind the person to any place or time. One can recite it while walking, driving or while performing household chores. It sets you free. Guru Arjan says, “Nam is mukti, liberation, jugati, way to attain liberation, fulfilment, tripati as well as bhugati, enjoyment. All who follow the pathway of Nam experience vismad, the incredible awe and wonder of knowing the greatness of the Supreme Being – vismad nad vismad ved, wondrous is the sound, wondrous the wisdom.
But mechanical repetition of Nam is not enough. One has to realise the Divine as a reality and be in harmony with him. When we recite gurbani or the divine Word we are in fact remembering the attributes of God and as a result the followers also try to imbibe good qualities like love for all creatures, sewa, forgiveness, universal brotherhood, fearlessness etc. Nam simran is the ultimate path of bliss, of liberation.

The Revival Of Bhakti

Aguru wondered whether his student was worthy of receiving the ashtakshara mantra that would release him from earthly ills. After much deliberation, he finally disclosed it, but only after wresting a promise from him that it would not be revealed to others. The student pondered over the mantra and the next day, went atop the village temple and announced the mantra to a large gathering that had collected there. The guru, furious, said that the worst hell awaited him. To which the student replied, ‘If this act of mine delivers thousands to heaven, i do not mind going to hell.’ Thrilled, the guru hugged his disciple. The guru was Saint Tirukkottiyur Nambi.
Ramanuja was born in a Vaishnava family at Sriperambudur, near Kanchipuram. His own teacher, Yadavaprakash, felt threatened by the clarity and extent of his knowledge and so decided to kill him. However, due to divine grace Ramanujacharya survived. Ramanujacharya was against the caste system. He took an illiterate but knowledgeable saint, Kanchipurna as his teacher. One night Ramanuja invited Kanchipurna to his house. After serving him food, Ramanuja offered to wash his feet. Kanchipurna was embarrassed as Ramanuja was a Brahmin. An upset Ramanuja declared that one who was devoted to God was beyond any social order.
Ramanuja expounded the Vishishtha Advaita philosophy – qualified non-dualism. It talks of a personal God who is one and only one (non-dual), but vishishtha, one with unique attributes. It says that the Supreme Being is ‘soul of all souls’. He explained that there were three factors of interplay: God or Brahmn, we or jivatmas, nature or prakriti. He further explained that God manifests in two modes: Chit or sentient, living beings and achit or non-sentient, without consciousness. Brahmn along with these two modes formed the Tattva Traya or the threefold doctrine of Vishishtha Advaita philosophy that established an organic relationship of oneness of the universe and individual souls along with Brahmn. Individual selves are sparks of the divine and the world is no illusion. This philosophy is an integral part of Sri Vaishnavism, which says that Sriman Narayana is Paratattva, Supreme Truth. He is the abode of all life and is antaryamin, the internal controller. He is easily approachable and responds to his devotee’s loving devotion. The philosophy is theistic and says Brahmn is the union of Vishnu and Lakshmi (Sri), the father and mother elements, respectively.
Ramanuja was deeply influenced by the 12 alwars or Vaishnavite poet-saints, who were immersed in bhakti or devotion towards Narayana. Through bhakti, Ramanujacharya advocated saranagati or total surrender to God. Indeed, Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita advises Arjuna to rise above the lesser dharmas or duties which keep the soul bound to matter. He urges Arjuna to 'surrender all unto me and I shall free you from fears, bondage and sorrows'. The act of surrender is termed as saranagati, which forms the nucleus of the vishistha advaita philosophy, and is referred to as the prapatti yoga. In deference to Yamunacharya’s wishes, Ramanujacharya wrote the Sribhashya, a commentary on the Brahmasutras, Gita Bhashya, Saranagati Gadyam, among many other works. He travelled all over India and standardised the liturgy at many temples including the Sri Venkateshwara temple at Tirupati, and the Cheluvanarayana temple at Melkote, Karnataka, where he spent a major part of his life.

Always absorbed in chanting and relishing his own holy names, Gaurasundar becomes intoxicated with ever-increasing passion. Sometimes he swoons, falling to the ground in a display of ineffable exultation. The Lord invites everyone, repeatedly encouraging them to sing the wonderful qualities of Sri Krishna, the prince of Vraja. But those who have never seen or perceived him in meditation, even only briefly, for them the attainment of prema bhakti is almost impossible.
Sri Caitanya Candramritam by Prabodhananda Sarasvatipada- Excerpt of his prayers.

The symptoms of one who is fully engaged in the process of chanting with love is difficult to describe but we have an idea of the love our acharyas showed while chanting, first feeling lots of mercy and love for every living entity trying to engage every one of them in Harinam Sankirtan. Goura Purnima is coming soon and this verse is to remind us of the great love Lord Chaitanya showed so we can have an idea of this pure love of Krsna, prema.

I pray so I can constantly chant the holy names of the Lord and receive association of the great vaisnavas so I can always be reminded of my position as eternal servant of the Lord.

Sri Krishna is the Source of all Creation

In Srimad Bhagavad-gita (10.8) Sri Krishna explains that He is the source of all spiritual and material worlds. "Everything emanates from Me. The wise who know this perfectly engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts."
Bhagavan Krishna further relates that all other sages and creators also originate from Him: "The seven great sages and before them the four other great sages and the Manus [progenitors of mankind] are born out of My mind, and all creatures in these planets descend from them." (Bg.10.6)
Jambavan also says to Bhagavan Krishna, "You are the ultimate creator of all creators of the universe, and of everything created You are the underlying substance. You are the subduer of all subduers, the Supreme Bhagavan and Supreme Soul of all souls." (Bhag.10.56. 27)
When the Devas approached Bhagavan Krishna to return to His eternal abode and wind up His earthly pastimes, they also recognized that He was the supreme God in their prayers : "You are the cause of the creation, maintenance and destruction of this universe. As time, You regulate the subtle and manifest states of material nature and control every living being. As the threefold wheel of time You diminish all things by Your imperceptible actions, and thus You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead... O Bhagavan, You are the supreme creator of this universe and the ultimate controller of all moving and nonmoving living entities. You are Hrishikesha, the supreme controller of all sensory activity, and thus You never become contaminated or entangled in the course of Your supervision of the infinite sensory activities within the material creation. On the other hand, other living entities, even yogis and philosophers, are disturbed and frightened simply by remembering the material objects that they have supposedly renounced in their pursuit of enlightenment. " (Bhag.11.6.15, 17)
Because Sri Krishna is the source of everything, it is not possible for others to determine His origin. "Neither the hosts of Devas nor the great Sages know My origin, for, in every respect, I am the source of the Devas and Sages." (Bg.10.2)
Arjuna also admits to this fact after having understood Krishna 's real characteristics: "O Krishna, I totally accept as truth all that You have told me. Neither the gods nor demons, O Bhagavan, know Thy personality. Indeed, You alone know Yourself by Your own potencies, O origin of all, Bhagavan of all beings, God of Gods, O Supreme Person, Bhagavan of the universe! (Bg.10.14-15) O great one, who stands above even Brahma, You are the original master. Why should they not offer their homage up to You, O limitless one? O refuge of the universe, You are the invincible source, the cause of all causes, transcendental to this material manifestation. (Bg.11.37) You are air, fire, water, and You are the moon! You are the supreme controller and the grandfather. Thus I offer my respectful obeisances unto You a thousand times, and again and yet again! Obeisances from the front, from behind and from all sides! O unbounded power, You are the master of limitless light! You are all-pervading, and thus You are everything! (Bg.11.39-40) You are the father of this complete cosmic manifestation, the worshipable chief, the spiritual master. No one is equal to You, nor can anyone be one with You. Within the three worlds, You are immeasurable. " (Bg.11.43)
Even the immeasurable spiritual entity called the Brahman is actually a tool that Krishna uses in which to create the cosmic manifestation. As Bhagavan explains, "The total material substance, called Brahman, is the source of birth, and it is that Brahman that I impregnate, making possible the births of all living beings, O son of Bharata [Arjuna]. It should be understood that all species of life, O son of Kunti, are made possible by birth in this material nature, and that I am the seed-giving father. (Bg.14.3-4) Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I am both its origin and dissolution. (Bg.7.6) I am the generating seed of all existences. There is no being--moving or unmoving--that can exist without Me. (Bg.10.39) Know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men." (Bg.7.10)
In this way, Bhagavan Krishna creates the material manifestation, and later absorbs it back into Himself. Then at His will, He again creates. "At the end of the millennium every material manifestation enters into My nature, and at the beginning of another millennium, by My potency I again create." (Bg.9.7)
"My dear Bhagavan, the original purusha-avatara, Maha-Vishnu, acquires His creative potency from You. Thus with infallible energy He impregnates material nature, producing the mahat-tattva. Then the mahat-tattva, the amalgamated material energy, endowed with the potency of the Bhagavan, produces from itself the primeval golden egg of the universe, which is covered by various layers of material elements." (Bhag.11.6.16)
Because Bhagavan Krishna is the source of everything, there is obviously nothing that He personally needs from it, nor is He ever entangled in it. He is like the warden of a prison who can go in or out of it at any time he wants. Yet He is still overseeing it. "O son of Pritha, there is no work prescribed for Me within all the three planetary systems. Nor am I in want of anything, nor have I need to obtain anything--and yet I am engaged in work. (Bg.3.22) There is no work that affects Me; nor do I aspire for the fruits of action. One who understands this truth about Me also does not become entangled in the fruitive reactions of work." (Bg.4.14)
Akrura also admitted to Bhagavan Krishna that, "You create, destroy and also maintain this universe with Your personal energies--the modes of passion, ignorance and goodness--yet You are never entangled by these modes or the activities they generate. Since You are the original source of all knowledge, what could ever cause You to be bound by illusion?" (Bhag.10.48. 21)
The summary process of how Bhagavan Krishna manifests and gives facility to the universe and the living entities within it is described in Vasudeva's prayer to Bhagavan Krishna: "O transcendental Bhagavan, from Yourself You created this entire variegated universe, and then You entered within it in Your personal form as the Supersoul. In this way, O unborn supreme Soul, as the life force and consciousness of everyone, You maintain the creation. Whatever potencies the life air and other elements of universal creation exhibit are actually all personal energies of the Supreme Bhagavan, for both life and matter are subordinate to Him and dependent on Him, and also different from one another. Thus, everything active in the material world is set into motion by the Supreme Bhagavan. The glow of the moon, the brilliance of fire, the radiance of the sun, the twinkling of the stars, the flash of lightning, the permanence of mountains and the aroma and sustaining power of the earth--all these are actually You. My Bhagavan, You are water, and also its taste and its capacities to quench thirst and sustain life. You exhibit Your potencies through the manifestations of the air as bodily warmth, vitality, mental power, physical strength, endeavor and movement. You are the directions and their accommodating capacity, the all-pervading ether and the elemental sound residing within it. You are the primeval, unmanifested form of sound; the first syllable, om: and audible speech, by which sound, as words, acquires particular references. You are the power of the senses to reveal their objects, the senses' presiding demigods, and the sanction these Devas give for sensory activity. You are the capacity of the intelligence for decision-making, and the living being's ability to remember things accurately. You are false ego in the mode of ignorance, which is the source of physical elements; false ego in the mode of passion, which is the source of the bodily senses; false ego in the mode of goodness, which is the source of the Devas; and the unmanifest, total material energy, which underlies everything. You are the indestructible entity among all the destructible things of this world, like the underlying substance that is seen to remain unchanged while the things made from it undergo transformation. " (Bhag.10.85. 5-12)
"Thus these created entities, transformations of material nature, do not exist except when material nature manifests them within You, at which time You also manifest within them. But aside from such periods of creation, You stand alone as the transcendental reality." (Bhag.10.85. 14)
Being the source of everything, Bhagavan Krishna explains how He is also the source of genuine religion. "The Supreme Personality of Godhead said : `O Brahmana, I am the speaker of religion, its performer and sanctifier. I observe religious principles to teach them to the world, My child, so do not be disturbed." (Bhag.10.69. 40)
Bhagavan Krishna goes on to say that the understanding of how He is the origination of everything is the knowledge which can free a person from sins: "He who knows Me as the unborn, as the beginningless, as the Supreme Bhagavan of all the worlds--he, undeluded among men, is freed from all sins." (Bg.10.3) This is the special nature of this spiritual knowledge.
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya !!!

Cow as a Sacred Asset of the Nation

India has 150 million cows today, giving an average of less than 200 litres of milk per year. If they could be fed and looked after, then these divine animals can give an average of 11,000 litres of milk as the Israeli Cows do. That could provide milk for the whole world. The milk we produce today is the cheapest in the world. With enhanced production by raising the productivity of milky cows , we can become the world's largest exporter of milk and India 's biggest foreign exchange earner.
Yet our West influenced intellectuals and mentally dominated by foreign idiom, sneer at the mention of the Cow, leave alone speaking about the Cow as an asset to the nation. But we know that these intellectuals first sneered at yoga, now it is a fashion for them doing *pranayama* at cocktail parties. They also sneered at our Sanyasis, calling them disparagingly as "Godmen". Now they flock to ashrams with their white friends ever since the Beatles did. Who knows, they may soon boast of a Cow in their backyards. For those of us who are Desi by pedigree and conviction, I place some facts about the Cow in the new perspective of modern Sanatana Dharma .

The Cow was elevated to the status of divinity in the Rg.Veda itself. In Book VI,the Hymn XXVIII attributed to Rishi Bhardwaja, extols the virtue of the Cow. In Atharva Veda (Book X, Hymn 10), the Cow is formally designated as Vishnu, and all that the Sun surveys. This divine quality of the Cow has been affirmed by Kautilya in his Arthsastra (Chapter XXIX) as well.

The Indian society has addressed the Cow as Gow-mata (Mother Cow) . The Churning of the Sea episode brings to light the story of the creation of the Cow. Five divine Kamadhenus (wish Cows), viz, Nanda, Subhadra, Surabhi, Sushila, Bahula emerged in the churning.
Cow is there in the company of Lord Dattatreya and Bhagavan Gopala Krishna. Cow is the vehicle of Shaillputri and Gowri two of the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga. Ancient coins with image of bull Nandi on them have been found in excavations.

Thousands of names of places, persons and things in our country have name of the Cow: e.g. Gauhati, Gorakhpur , Goa, Godhra, Gondiya, Godavari , Goverdhan, Gautam, Gomukh, Gokarna, Goyal, Gochar etc. , that signify the deep reverence and high ground reserved for the Cow and her progeny in our culture. Why ? Because of the deep abiding faith that the Cow is verily the Annapurna Devi .

In 2003, the National Commission on Cattle presided over by Justice G.M. Lodha, submitted its recommendations to the NDA Government. The Report (in 4 volumes) called for stringent laws to protect the Cow and its progeny in the interest of India 's rural economy. This is anyway a Constitutional requirement under Directive Principles of State Policy. Article 48 of the Constitution says: "The State shall endeavour to organize agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter of Cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle". In 1958, a 5-member Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court . { (1959) SCR 629} upheld Article 48 and the consequently held total ban on Cow slaughter as a reasonable restriction on Fundamental Rights of all Indians.
When India fought the First War of Independence in 1857, and Bahadur Shah Zafara was installed as Emperor by the Hindus in Delhi for a brief period, his Hindu Prime Minister, on the Emperors Proclamation, made the killing of Cow a capital offence. 'Earlier in Maharaja Ranjit Singh's kingdom, the only crime that had capital punishment was Cow slaughter.

For a Hindu, the very appearance of a Cow evokes a sense of piety. See however the most reckless bus driver avoids the Cow that squats in the middle of the road. The Cow is serene by temperament and herbivorous by diet. It is multi-product animal. Apart from milk, Cow dung known for its anti-septic value, is still used as fuel in its dried caked form in most Indian villages. It is also used in compost manure and in the production of electricity through eco-friendly gobar-gas. Thus, Gandhiji had declared: "Cow protection is more important than even Swaraj."

The Cow, according to the Vedas provides the following four products for human society :
  1. Godugdha (Cow milk) :As per Ayurveda, Cow milk's composition has fat, carbohydrate, minerals, calcium, Iron and Vitamin B, an even a capacity for resistance of the body against radiation and regenerate brain cells.
  2. Goghruta (Cow Ghee) : Best among all kinds of ghee. As per Ayurveda classics it is useful in various kind of systematic, physical and mental disorders as well as it sustain the age for long time. When it is used in Yajna, it improves the oxygen level in the air around.
  3. Gomutra(Cow Urine): A total of 8 types of urine are used for medicinal purpose now a days. Among those, Cow urine is held to be the best . Hence the Americans are busy patenting while we are busy sneering about it . Anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal property is found in it . It is also having anti-oxidant and immuno modulator property, which is very much useful for immune deficiency diseases which are increasing now a day. In classics there are so many references available where Cow urine is mentioned as a drug of choice. Even Parsis of Zoroastrian religion follow this practice. Besides milk and dung, the ancient Hindu wisdom that Cow's urine has medicinal properties and hence accessible at low cost to the rural poor, is borne out by Patents granted in United States.
Two US patents have been granted for Cow urine distillate (US Pat. No. 6410059 & 6896907) for anti-micro-bial, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-cancer properties, also it is having a lot of anti-exidants. Since it has got immumo-modulatory compounds in it, it is a very good bio-enhancer to facilitate drug availability to high extent in our body. Patent from China is also granted to Cow urine distillate as a DNA protector.
One global patent has been granted for Cow urine, neem and garlic as a pest repellent, fungicidal and growth promontory properties for all different crops (WHO 2004/087618A1). Another US patent has been granted for strains obtained from Sahiwal Cow milk for plant growth promoter phytopathogenic fungi controlling activity, abiotic stress tolerating capability, phosphatic solubilisation capability, etc. (US patent No. 7097830 dated 29/8/06).
Also CSIR has filed US patent for Amrit Pani (mixture of Cow dung + Cow urine + jaggery) from NBRI Lucknow for soil health improvement properties. All the above claims had been made in Charaka Samhita, Sushrut, Vaghbhati and Nighantu, Ratnakar, etc.

The above examples very well prove the utility of Cow dung and urine for sustainable agriculture as well as for almost curing or giving relief in many serious diseases like psoriasis, eczema, asthma, diabetes, blood pressure, renal failures and cancer, etc.
This confirms Vedic message: *Gomay Vasate Laxmii.e.* Cow dung is a source of wealth, whereas in western culture dung and urine are considered to be waste, even if their modern medical research has begun changing its view.
  4. Gomaya (Cow Dung) : Gomaya is considered equally valuable as Gau mutra and it is used to purify the environment . Cow dung has radium and it checks the radiation effects.
Furthermore, the common argument in the West for slaughtering Cows is no more uncontested. Beef is not of high protein content as believed. Any dietician's chart shows that beef, with 22 per cent protein, ranks far below vegetable products like soyabeen (43), groundnut (31), pulses (24). Moreover, excess intake of protein is not good as it only contributes to obesity, a bane of modern civilization. Moreover, to procure 1 kg of beef (or for that matter any flesh) it takes 7 kg of crops and 7,000 kg. of water.
Thus protection of the Cow thus makes good economic and ecological sense. Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the scholar-Sanyasi and Convenor of the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha, a body of all prominent Hindu religious heads, has argued that non-vegetarianism indirectly contributes heavily to green house gases and other pollution.

He quotes a report from the United Nations of the year 2006 that reveals the surprising fact that raising animals for meat as food generates more green house gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. Ten of billions of animals farmed for food, release gases such as methane, nitrous oxide and carbon-di-oxide through their massive amounts of manure. Animals such as Cows and sheep, being ruminant, emit huge amount of methane due to flatulence and burping. The released methane, the report says, has 23 times the global warming potential of CO2. It is alarming to note that the livestock industry alone is responsible for 37% of human induced methane emissions. To make room for these animals to graze, the virgin forests are cleared. The livestock industry also needs a vast stretches of land to raise mono-crops to feed the animals. The CO2 that the trees and plants store escapes back into the air when they are destroyed.
Growing fodder for farmed animals implies heavy use of synthetic fertilizers produced with fossil fuels. While this process emits a huge amount of CO2 fertilizer itself releases nitrous oxide (3) " a green house gas that is 296 times more potent than CO2. Alarming though these facts are, Swamiji sees in them a reason for hope. All that the people ever have to do is to avoid red-meat eating. In the absence of demand for meat , there is no more need for breeding millions of animals for daily slaughter. And then animals population would cease to be medicated or inseminated for continuous breeding, thereby the population would be regulated.
A single individual by simply not consuming meat prevents the equivalent of 1.5 tons CO2 emissions in a year. This is more than the one ton of CO2 emissions prevented by switching from a large sedan to a small car. One needs to have an honest commitment to save the mother earth who has been relentlessly patient and magnanimous since she began bearing life. There are a number of reasons for one to be a vegetarian. People given to meat eating think that a pure vegetarian diet is optional. But now they have no choice if they are alive to what is happening to this life-bearing planet. There is no justification whatsoever for one to continue to be a non-vegetarian knowing the devastating consequences of meat eating.

The Shield of the Holy Name (Maha Mantra)

"If you don't chant your sixteen rounds, it's like you've left the door open to your place. So when it's your turn for Maya to attack, when it's your turn to get bombarded by the modes of material nature, if you haven't closed your door properly, Maya will just walk right in and you'll be finished. And if you do chant your sixteen rounds, you have that protection, you have that shield. It's like you locked your door against Maya. So when it's your turn to get hit up by Maya, she'll say, ‘Forget this one; it's too much trouble,' and she'll move on to somebody weaker."

That made me chant all my rounds all these years. That lecture made me realize how important chanting sixteen rounds is. You have that shield that wards off Maya.

At the present moment our minds are polluted with the dirt accumulated over millions and millions of lifetimes of sense gratification. Even though our original pure nature is eternal, full of knowledge, and full of bliss, due to our mental contamination we are presently suffering in the realm of temporality, ignorance, and misery. By the purificatory process of chanting the holy names of God we can revive our original, pure nature and thus relish the sweetest happiness at every minute.
Chant:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare

And what are the shackles of this prison life?

yada samharate cayam
kurmo 'nganiva sarvasah
indriyanindriyarthe bhyas
tasya prajna pratisthita
[Bg. 9.58]

And what are the shackles of this prison life? The shackles of prison life... Just like in ordinary prison, prisoner.... Of course, I do not know what is the case here of prison life, but I have seen. Sometimes in New Delhi I was invited to give some good lessons to the prisoners. So I have seen so many prisoners. They were shackled with iron chains, iron chains. So we are also chained up here, and what is that chain? That is our sense enjoyment. Yes. We are chained in this material world by sense enjoyment. That's all. So if we want to cut our prison life, then the first symptom will be to minimize this sense enjoyment or to regulate the sense enjoyment. Here the Lord says that yada samharate cayam kurmo 'nganiva sarvasah. The example is given just like the tortoise. The tortoise can close up, wind up his senses as he likes. That means he becomes the master of the senses. He does not like to be the servant of the senses. So this, I mean to say, verse, we have already discussed. So indriyanindriyarthe bhyas tasya prajna pratisthita. One who is practiced to control his senses... Senses are not to be stopped. They are to be used at proper time, but not at the dictation of the senses. When one comes to that standard of life, that he is not dictated by the senses but he uses senses when it is properly required... Senses are not to be stopped. That is not prescribed. That is not prescribed. Somebody says that sense control means to use, to stop the action of the senses. No. Senses, action of the senses, cannot be stopped. Simply it has to be purified. The action of the senses has to be purified. That is the whole process. Because as spiritual living entity, we have got our spiritual senses. Those senses are now covered by this matter. We are not senseless. Just like your coat. Your coat is cut according to your hands. Because the coat, you will see, the coat has also got a hand. And why coat has got a hand? Because the user of the coat, he has got a hand. The coat is cut according to the hand of the user of the body. Similarly, this material body has been described in the Bhagavad-gita as dress. So unless I have got body, wherefrom the dress comes? Dress has no meaning unless I have got body.

So senses are there, and those senses are required to be used; otherwise there is no meaning of senses. But that is spiritual. So senses have to be engaged in the spiritual activities. That is spiritual life, spiritual life. The example, as I have already explained to you many times, just like Arjuna. He wanted to control his senses to refrain from fighting. When you fight, you require to engage your senses. He said that "I will not fight." That means he is controlling his senses from fighting. But after hearing Bhagavad-gita, he says, "Yes, I'll fight." Just see. Before hearing Bhagavad-gita, the position of Arjuna, that "I," "I will not fight," and after hearing Bhagavad-gita, the position of "I," "Yes, I will fight." Two contradictory. Before hearing Bhagavad-gita, the position of "I" was negative, and people may estimate this nonviolence attitude of Arjuna very nicely. But after Bhagavad-gita, after hearing Bhagavad-gita, he said, "Yes." Karisye vacanam tava: [Bg. 18.73] "Yes, I shall fight." Now, do you mean to tell that he degraded? First of all he was nonviolent. He was not willing to fight. Now he has degraded after hearing Bhagavad-gita? Is it..., is the conclusion? No. He has improved. He has improved. Why he has improved? Because he has understood how to use the senses. That's all. In the beginning he did not know how to use the senses. Therefore he decided, "I shall not fight. I shall not fight." That is his material calculation.

So our material calculation is all nonsense.. Our material calculation of our activities, they are all nonsense. They are all causes of our bondage. And when the same senses, they are engaged in the service of the Supreme, that is our freedom. Kamah krsna-karmarpane. Here the same thing is indirectly explained. Yada samharate cayam kurmo 'nganiva. One should know "When I shall properly use the senses." That is the sign of a person who is situated in pure consciousness. He knows properly, "How to use my senses." That is the difference by the instruction of Bhagavad-gita, we'll find, that in the beginning Arjuna did not know how to use his senses, and after hearing Bhagavad-gita, he learned it. He became a learned man, how to use his senses. And when he did not know how to use his senses, he said, "I shall not fight." And when he learned how to use senses, he said, "Yes, I'll fight." Now, what is the difference between "yes" and "no"? That means when our senses are engaged in the service of the supreme consciousness, then we are in pure consciousness situation. And when our senses are used to our whims, to our whims. Just like in the previous sloka it has been explained, prajahati yada kaman sarvan partha mano-gatan. We manufacture plans by our mental concoction. That should be given up. Yada prajahati kaman sarvan. All kinds of mental concoction, mental speculation, should be given up. That is the science. That is the beginning of our spiritual life, that "I shall not use my mind for my activities. I shall wait for the direction from the higher authority, supreme consciousness. Then I shall act."

Just like a soldier, he is simply awaiting the order of the commander. Then his activities are approved, "Oh, he is doing nicely. Yes." By the approval of the commander, he is killing as many persons, and by this killing art, he is being rewarded, "Oh, you are a good soldier." But that killing, if he does for his personal interest, even he kills one man, he is hanged -- by the same state. By the same state for which he is engaged in fighting, if he kills enemies, he is rewarded. He is awarded gold medal, recognition. And that very person, out of the war field, when he comes home, if he kills one man, then he is hanged. If he says that "The same killing I was doing in the war field, and same killing I have done. There I was killing hundreds and thousands of men. I was awarded gold medal. And here I have killed only one person. I am being hanged? What is this?" No. You have killed according to your own whims, and that is from the superior order. That is the difference. Similarly, if we do, if we act according to our mental speculation or mental whims, then we are bound up by the reaction. And if we practice ourself to be active under the direction of the Supreme, then we are free. This is the art. This is the whole art of spiritual life.

So we have to practice. We have to practice it in our everything. Because for so long we are in this material body, we have got so many material demands. We cannot stop the activities of the body. That is not possible. By force, if I stop all the activities of my body, that is not possible. That is not possible. The bodily activities will go on, but the bodily activities will be so performed that I'll not be bound up by the reaction. And that is called devotional service. That is called

As the living entity is promoted to the platform of human life

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya
tadatmanam srjamy aham
[Bg. 4.7]

The whole material atmosphere is going on, but we... There is a program. There is a plan. The plan is that, as soon as the living entity is promoted by gradual evolution, promoted to the platform of human life, he has to understand his spiritual position. That is the whole program. The nature is going on on this plan of the Supreme Lord. The plan of the Supreme Lord. All the living entities here, in this, whatever we see... Sarva-yonisu kaunteya sambhavanti murtayah yah [Bg. 14.4]. The Lord says, Lord Sri Krsna says, "Whatever forms of life, living entities, you are seeing before you, all of them are born of Me. They are My part and parcel. I am..." Aham bija-pradah pita. "I am the father. I am the father." So Lord Sri Krsna, or God, He is the father of every living being. He does not like to see that His sons undergo unnecessary miseries. He does not like to see. Why? If we are sons of God, and what is the position of God? All powerful, all opulence, all wealth, all beauty, all knowledge, everything in full. That is the conception of God. Now, if we are sons of God, then we are very rich man's son. Then why should he suffer? We should not have suffered. But some way or other, by material contact, we are suffering. We are suffering. Now, this suffering, we have become so much accustomed to sufferings that we have taken it granted that these sufferings are nonmaterial. "Let us enjoy this material life. This suffering... " They don't care for suffering. You see? They want this material enjoyment, which is the cause of his bondage. It is cause of bondage. So they do not want... Just like there are some prisoners who do not like to get out of the prison life. They think it is better to remain in the prison because "I have no responsibility. If I go outside the prison, oh, I will have to search out some work. Oh, that is botheration. Let me remain here." Or even after the termination of the prison life, when he comes out, he commits again some criminal act so that he may be put again into the jail. He has been accustomed. Similarly, he does not take seriously the miseries of prison life. He is so accustomed that he does not take. That is ignorance. That is ignorance. Similarly, those who are in this material world under the shackles of material modes of nature, they have completely forgotten that we have got a spiritual life which is full of freedom, full of knowledge, full of bliss, and we can become exactly almost like God. These things they have forgotten. They think that "If, from the C-class prisoner's life, I can become an A-class prisoner..." Just like in the prison life there are some classes, A-class prisoner, B-class prisoner, C-class prisoner, similarly, our endeavor is going on in this material life to become A-class prisoner. The program is not for getting out of the prison life, but we want to become A-class prisoner. That is ignorance. That is ignorance.

It is very difficult to get rid of Egotism

A person who has given up all desires for sense gratification, who lives free from desires, who has given up all sense of proprietorship and is devoid of false ego--he alone can attain real peace. B GITA 2 - 71

The bewildered spirit soul, under the influence of the three modes of material nature, thinks himself to be the doer of activities, which are in actuality carried out by nature. GITA 3 - 27

When we see something significant in our selves, it is a major flaw. If we see smartness in our self (such as - I know the Gita by heart, I have an in-depth understanding of the meaning and expressions of the Gita etc), or if we see spiritual goodness in us, (e.g. I worship God, I meditate, I chant devotional songs, I repeat His holy name etc), or anything great that we see in our self, it is all egotism. By whatever means we find something special in our self, that is egotism.

This egoism can come due to one's caste, color, creed, stage in life, knowledge, intelligence and many other forms of arrogance and conceit. It is different forms of pride that can lead to one's downfall. Thinking that we have - good qualities, desirable abilities, knowledge, smartness, articulation etc. is egotism. Such egotism coming from goodness is dangerous and difficult to get rid off.

With respect to "Egotism" it has been said in Ramayana -
"Sansrut mool soolprad naanan, sakal sauk daayak abhimaana." (Manasa 7:74:3)
All devilish tendencies, bad qualities, evil actions, operate under the umbrella of "Egotism." (arrogance, conceit).

The more effort we put into getting rid of this egotism, the more it becomes firmly established. The more ways that we find to wipe out the pride and arrogance, the solutions themselves will increase our egotism. It is truly very difficult to get rid of Egotism.

A spiritual aspirant must keep in mind that whatever good qualities he has, are not his own, rather they have come from God. Being a part of God, the Self (Atma) is flawless and without qualities. Therefore those great qualities should be understood as being God's, not ours. By believing and understanding with a firm resolve that these good qualities are all God's, there will be no egotism. This pride and arrogance cannot be rooted out by our self, it needs the grace of God. On this subject a spiritual aspirant must remain very vigilant.

Teachings of Lord Caitanya

Lord Caitanya taught this philosophy through the chanting of the holy name of the Lord. He taught that the holy name of the Lord is the sound incarnation of the Lord and that since the Lord is the absolute whole, there is no difference between His holy name and His transcendental form. Thus by chanting the holy name of the Lord one can directly associate with the Supreme Lord by sound vibration.

At His birth, in His childhood and in His early and later boyhood, as well as in His youth, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, under different pleas, induced people to chant the holy name of Hari [the Hare Krsna maha-mantra] .

In His childhood, when the Lord was crying He would stop immediately upon hearing the holy names Krsna and Hari. During His pauganda age He became a serious student and also taught disciples. In this way He used to explain the holy name of Krsna everywhere. When Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was a student, He asked whomever He met to chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. In this way He inundated the whole town of Navadvipa with the chanting of Hare Krsna.

Just prior to His youthful life, He began the sankirtana movement. Day and night He used to dance in ecstasy with His devotees. The sankirtana movement went on from one part of the town to another, as the Lord wandered everywhere performing kirtana. In this way He inundated the whole world by distributing love of Godhead.

Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu lived in the Navadvipa area for twenty-four years, and He induced every person to chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra and thus merge in love of Krsna. For His remaining twenty-four years, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, after accepting the renounced order of life, stayed at Jagganatha Puri with His devotees. For six of these twenty-four years in Jagganatha Puri He distributed love of Godhead by always chanting and dancing. Beginning from Cape Comorin and extending through Bengal to Vrndavana, during these six years He toured all of India , chanting, dancing and distributing love of Krsna.

The activities of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu in His travels after He accepted sannyasa are His principal pastimes. His activities during His remaining eighteen years are called the antya-lila, or the final portion of His pastimes. For six of the eighteen years He continuously stayed in Jagganatha Puri, He regularly performed kirtana, inducing all the devotees to love Krsna simply by chanting and dancing. For the remaining twelve years He stayed in Jagganatha Puri, He taught everyone how to taste the transcendental mellow ecstasy of love of Krsna by tasting it Himself.

One may raise the question how all three worlds became inundated with love of Krsna, since Caitanya Mahaprabhu performed kirtana only in the Navadvipa area. The answer is that Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself. The entire cosmic manifestation results from the Lord’s first setting it in motion. Similarly, since the sankirtana movement was first set in motion five hundred years ago by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s desire that it spread all over the universe, the Krsna consciousness movement, in continuity of that same motion, is now spreading all over the world, and in this way it will gradually spread all over the universe. With the spread of the Krsna consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krsna. (CC Adi-lila 13:22-38)

O most munificent incarnation! You are Krsna Himself appearing as Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. You have assumed the golden color of Srimati Radharani, and You are widely distributing pure love of Krsna. We offer our respectful obeisances unto You. (Rupa Goswami CC Madhya-lila 19.54)

Realization of Freedom from Evils

Gist: Self (soul) being a part of God is innately free from evils. Trying to get rid of evil in us is accepting them in us. Be indifferent to (be detached, become an observer of) evils rather than trying to wipe them out. Evil is distinct and apart from the Self. Evil is born only because of our affinity with the unreal (nature). Evils make their dream like appearance but have no existence of their own. Our inherent Self, like God is Pure, free of evils and ever attained.

Realization of Freedom from Evils

Man (Soul, Self) being only a part of God is identical with God in attributes. As God is totally free from evils, so is a man; and this freedom from evils is not acquired, it is innate and axiomatic. In the Ramacaritamanasa Saint Tulasidasa declares -

"Ishwar ansh jeev avinaashi, chetan amal sahaj sukhraashi." (Manasa 7:117:7)
[Soul being a fragment of God in its nature is sentient, pure and an embodiment of bliss.]

People have a strong conviction that they will attain God only after having freed themselves from evils. But the method of attaining God is quite different from that of gaining mundane material objects. Mundane objects are acquired, while God being eternally existent, is ever attained. The Self (Soul) is inherently free from evils and is ever attained. It is important to accept this fact, that purity is not to be inculcated. Be indifferent (detached, observer) to evils rather than trying to wipe them out. If we try to get rid of them by accepting them in us, we will rather confirm them. The reason is that our wiping them out supposes their pre-existence.

Every aspirant has the experience that evils were more forceful, more lasting and occurred more frequently than they do today. This reduction in frequency and intensity should encourage an aspirant that these evils are not inherent in him. Had they been a part of his nature, these changes would not have taken place. Though there is changes in nature (in frequency of evil acts), there is no change in the Self. It means that evil is distinct from the Self.

All evils such as desire, anger, greed, infatuation, pride and jealousy etc., are 'Asat' (unreal) i.e. they have no existence of their own and are born because of our affinity with the unreal. While sleeping, one dreams and forgets their wakeful state, similarly by assuming a relationship with the unreal, we become unaware of our inherent pure nature and feel ourselves to be impure. In the same manner, these evils make their dream like appearance but have no existence of their own.

Paths available for attainment of "Mukti " or "Salvation" .

The main implements or "sadhanas" to attain the fourth putrusharttha, i.e., Mukti or salvation are Bhakti (devotion), Jnana (Spiritual knowledge) and Vairagya (Renunciation. )

"Bhakti" is immense love to God, which matures into devotion which is the direct connecting link between the devotee and the Lord. The path of Bhakti is termed as "Bhakti-yoga" , that of Jnana, "Jnana-yoga" .

The Vedas, scriptures, mythology and tradition say that Jnana, Supreme knowledge about the true nature of God, is the only way to gain salvation. The Puranams, especially, Bhagavatam, and Narayaneeyam, the epitome of Bhagavatam glorify the Bhakti-yoga and tell us that Bhakti is the easiest path to attain the Lord, as Jnana-yoga is fraught with difficult study of the scriptures, and takes a much longer time to attain the objective, Mukti, as the Lord Himself has said in the Gita, "Bahoonam janmanam anthe Jnanavan Mam prapadyate". (At the end of many Janmas, the man of knowledge attains Me."

Karma-yoga, the path of action, i.e., performing one's duty without expecting fruits of action is not a direct path to attain the Lord, but following the path of Karma bestows purity of mind and renders the aspirant, equipped with competence necessary to follow the path of Bhakti or Knowledge according to the desire of the aspirant. This competence is known as "Sadhana-chatushtay a-sampathih" or the successful attainment of the four-fold sadhanas or accomplishments, given below.

This is known as the "four-fold sadhanas" or "Sadhana-chatushtay am". The four-fold sadhanas or preliminary qualifications, the means to the attainment of knowledge are: 1.Vairagyam (dispassion or detachment), 2.Viveka (discrimination) , 3. shat-sampatthis (the six treasures described below) and 4. Mumukshuthwam (yearning for liberation.) . The six treasures under item 3 above are Sama (abandonment of desires), Dama (restraint of the external functions of the organs), Upaarati (turning away from all sense-objects) , Titiksha (patient endurance of sorrow and pain), Sraddha (faith in the words of Vedas and teachers), and Samadhana (Concentration of the mind on the only object "SAT" (Brahman). This attainment is a must, whichever path is ultimately followed. Each one of these factors will come for discussion at the appropriate contexts when the Bhagavata Dharmas are elaborated.

However, devotion is a superior form (altered state) of this Supreme Knowledge. One who follows the path of devotion does not confront any unforeseen problems as in the case of the path of knowledge and the devotee gets a smooth passage towards his goal. The superiority of the path of devotion over other paths has been highlighted throughout Bhagavatam On account of the greatness of Bhakti, the mind gets freed of all fears. The fear complex arising out of Samsara, (birth-death cycles), is totally eradicated along with what we call "vasanas", the residual impressions of past actions left in the mind. The Lord declares in the Gita, " Mam upethya tu Kountheya, Punar-janma na vidyate." Bg 8/16 (One who has attained Me, O son of Kunti, is never reborn.) Further, in the path of devotion, there will be no deficiencies due to physical disability or effects of wrong perception as detailed in the Karma-kanda of the Vedas. As stated in the Phala-sruti or narration of fruits of prayer) of Vishnu Sahasranama like, "Na Vasudeva-bhaktanam asubham vidyate quachit" (Nothing untoward ever befalls devotees of Lord Vaasudeva; even fears about rebirth, death, old age, sickness do not arise) ---– this is how we reassure ourselves while chanting the thousand names of the Lord. Failure in following a prescribed procedure can lead to mistakes in the path of knowledge. This also is absent in the path of devotion. One who worships the Lord according to the procedures advised by Him to Arjuna and Uddhava, and the different methods of prayer spread all over the world through sages like Suka and Narada; adopting these methods of worship at the Lord's feet in whatever humble way possible, offering Him a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water, a man will never ever slip and fall down, even if he runs around with his eyes closed in the path of delusion. Even if he has given up all rituals to be performed as prescribed by the Vedas or the Smritis, he will not encounter any obstacles or falter. The Lord advises the same. "Sarva-dharman parityajya Mam ekam saranam vraja, Aham twam sarva-papebhyo mokshayishyami ma suchah." Bg. 18/66. (Giving up all Dharmas (duties), seek refuge in Me and Me alone, I shall liberate you from all your sins, grieve not!). "Nehabhikrama- nasosthi pratyavayo na vidyate; Swalpam apyasya dharmasya, thrayate mahato bhayat." Bg.2/40. (In this path of devotion combined with selfless action, no effort is lost because of incompleteness and no adverse effect is produced due to failures. Even a little observance of this discipline saves one from the terrible fear of birth and death.)

The advice regarding the path of devotion, Bhakti-yoga given to Uddhava is contained in Chapters 19 and 20 of Book X1 of Bhagavatam. A few slokas from Bhag. XI-19/20-23 are reproduced below, if not all :

The meaning of Hare Krishna Mantra

This mantra is made up of only three words : 'Hare', Krishna and 'Rama'. 'Krishna' and 'Rama' are the name of Lord Vishnu - one of the mythological God in the trinity of Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It is said that in every yug (era) Vishnu takes incarnation on earth to establish the law of truth and righteousness.

Ram is the name of the incarnation of Vishnu in the Treta yug ( you must have heard the famous story of Ramayana - the popular Indian epic. Rama is the hero of that epic.

Krishna is the name of the incarnation of Vishnu in the 'Dwaper yug'. He is the central character in the Mahabharata (pronounced approximately as Ma-haa-BHAAR-a-ta ) -the another popular epic of India (which incidentally is the longest epic of the world). Krishna is the most popular God of Hindu religion. The Bhagawad Gita - the highly spiritual and mesmerizing conversation between Krishna and Arjuna( one of the bravest and famous character of Mahabharata ) on the battle ground of Kurukshetra is one of the most popular and respected religious books of World.

Both these words 'Rama' and 'Krishna' have become powerful and effective for the simple reason that for thousand of years millions of Hindus have been praying to God by chanting these two names. The faith, devotion and a pure spiritual feeling with which these two names have been chanted by all these devotees for so many years have made these words electrifying- charged with energy. Just repeating these names can take anyone into meditation quickly.

The word Hare has come from 'Haran' which means to take way or to end. So when one says hare Krishna, he requests the God (the supreme consciousness) to take away his sorrows , his shortcomings, his failures and pains. This Hare Krishna Mantra is actually a little prayer to God for taking away all the sorrows, pains and shortcomings of the chanter and provide him bliss and joy.

"Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare"

Whenever you chant this mantra, always keep its meaning in mind. Chant this mantra with devotion and faith . While repeating his mantra request the God almighty to take away all your sorrows, pains and failures and give you joy and bliss.

It is the experience of many that when one repeat this mantra with full faith and with full awareness of its meaning, his/her whole being gets filled with Krishna Consciousness ( which is a name given to the feeling of bliss and joy one gets in repeating this mantra.)

This mantra is a very easy mantra. You can chant it anytime, anywhere. Give at least 15 minutes per day for this mantra repetition. Sit quietly in a comfortable position. Then either chant it silently or loudly. Repeat it with full awareness of its meaning which is " O lord, take away all my sorrows, pains and shortcomings and give me bliss and joy".

This mantra is a simple and effective meditation technique. Slowly you will start enjoying it as its repetition will give you a sense of calm and bliss.

The importance of Hare Krishna Maha Mantra

Originally, the Maha Mantra was
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare.

This was the original Vedic Mantra and anyone and every one cannot invoke this mantra. It has to be properly invoked and only a qualified Brahmana has the required qualification to utter such holy mantra. This was possible only in the rest of the 3 previous yugas. However, in Kali Yuga, there are no Brahmanas at all to invoke the above mantra. In Kali Yuga, all are none but Sudras, because of the degradation.

Therefore, out of His causeless mercy for the fallen Kali Yuga Jeevas, Sri Chaitanya Maha Prabhu, who is none other than the Supreme Lord Krishna Himself, and who has incarnated 500 years ago, has changed the order of the above Mantra, while retaining the same potency of the original mantra, so that anyone and everyone can easily chant this holy name in this Kali Yuga and get purified. The newly-changed mantra is as follows :

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

Thus, the Lord has made His mercy more easily available to one and all without exception.

Text
daardhya lägi’ ‘harer näma’-ukti tina-vära
jada loka bujhäite punah ‘eva’-kära

Translation
“This verse repeats the word ‘eva’ [‘certainly’] three times for emphasis, and it also three times repeats ‘harer näma’ [‘the holy name of the Lord’], just to make common people understand.”

Purport
To emphasize something to an ordinary person, one may repeat it three times, just as one might say, “You must do this! You must do this! You must do this!” Thus the Bruhad-näradiya Puräanaa repeatedly emphasizes the chanting of the holy name so that people may take it seriously and thus free themselves from the clutches of mäyä. It is our practical experience in the Krishna Consciousness movement all over the world that many millions of people are factually coming to the spiritual stage of life simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mahä-mantra regularly, according to the prescribed principles. Therefore, our request to all our students is that they daily chant at least sixteen rounds of this Hare Krishna mahä-mantra offenselessly, following the regulative principles. Thus their success will be assured without a doubt.

Sreemad Bhagavatham 12.3.51

Translation
My dear King, although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mahä-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom.

Purport
After mentioning the innumerable faults of this age of Kali, Sukadeva Gosvämi now mentions its one brilliant aspect. Just as one powerful king can kill innumerable thieves, one brilliant spiritual quality can destroy all the contamination of this age. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Räma, Hare Räma, Räma Räma, Hare Hare, especially in this fallen age.

Sreemad Bhagavatham 12.3.52

Text

Translation
Whatever result was obtained in Satya-yuga by meditating on Vishnu, in Tretä-yuga by performing sacrifices, and in Dväpara-yuga by serving the Lord’s lotus feet can be obtained in Kali-yuga simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mahä-mantra.

Purport
A similar verse is found in the Vishnu Puräna (6.2.17), and also in the Padma Puräna (Uttara-khanda 72.25) and the Bruhad-näradéya Puräna (38.97):

dhyäyan krte yajan yajnais
tretäyäà dväpare ’rcayan
yad äpnoti tad äpnoti
kalau saìkértya kesavam

Translation
“Whatever is achieved by meditation in Satya-yuga, by the performance of sacrifice in Tretä-yuga, and by the worship of Lord Krishna’s lotus feet in Dväpara-yuga is obtained in the age of Kali simply by glorifying the name of Lord Kesava.”

Srila Jiva Gosvämi has further quoted from the Brahma-vaivarta Puräna concerning the degraded condition of people in Kali-yuga:

atah kalau tapo-yoga-
vidyä-yajnädikäh kriyäh
sängä bhavanti na krtah
kusalair api dehibhih

“Thus in the age of Kali the practices of austerity, yoga meditation, Deity worship, sacrifice and so on, along with their various subsidiary functions, are not properly carried out, even by the most expert embodied souls.

Srila Jiva Gosvämi has also cited the Cäturmäsya-mähätmya of the Skanda Puräna concerning the necessity of chanting Hare Krishna in this age:

tathä caivottamam loke
tapah çré-hari-kértanam
kalau yuge visesena
vishnuu-prityai samäcaret

“In this way the most perfect penance to be executed in this world is the chanting of the name of Lord Sri Hari. Especially in the age of Kali, one can satisfy the Supreme Lord Vishnu by performing sankeertana.’’

In conclusion, massive propaganda should be made all over the world to induce people to chant the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, by which human society can be rescued from the dangerous ocean of the age of Kali.

Teachings of Prahlada Maharaj - Chapter one

There are two kinds of men in this world; one is called the demon, and the other is called the demigod. What is the difference between them? The main difference is that the demigods or godly persons are devoted to the Supreme Lord, whereas the demons are atheistic. They do not believe in God because they are materialists.
These two classes of men always exist in this world. At the present moment, due to this age of Kali (Quarrel), the number of demons has increased, but the classification has existed since the beginning of creation.
This boy Prahlad Maharaja happened to be the son of the most atheistic person and the most materially powerful as well--so you will be interested to hear this history. Because the society was materialistic, this boy had no opportunity to glorify the Supreme Lord. The characteristic of a great soul is that he is very eager to broadcast glorification of the Supreme Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, for example, was very much eager to broadcast the glorification of God, but demoniac people misunderstood him and crucified him.
Prahlad Maharaja was a five-year-old boy, and, when he was in school, as soon as there was a recreation period, when the teacher was off, he would say to his friends, "My dear friends, come on. We shall speak about Krsna consciousness." I am just opening a scene. This is Srimad-Bhagavatam, Seventh Canto, Sixth Chapter. The devotee Prahlad is saying, "My dear boys, my dear friends, this is the time, in this young
age, to prosecute Krsna consciousness." Before that, he had held discussions with his little friends, but they said, "Oh, we shall now play. Why take up Krsna consciousness?" In answer to this, Prahlad Maharaja is stating, "If you are intelligent, then you must begin Krsna consciousness from childhood!"
Srimad-Bhagavatam offers bhagavata-dharma, or scientific knowledge about God. Bhagavatam means the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and dharma means the regulative principles of understanding Krsna consciousness. This human form of life is very rare. It is a great opportunity. Therefore, Prahlad says, "My dear friends, you are born as civilized human beings, so this is the greatest opportunity." Although it is temporary--I do not know what is the length of my life--it is calculated that in this age the human body is meant to exist not more than a hundred years. But as the age of Kali advances, duration of life, memory, mercy, religiousness and all other such assets decrease.
Although it is temporary, you can achieve the highest perfection of life while in this human form. Why is this so important? This is the opportunity--you can understand the Supreme Lord, the all-pervading Lord. For other life forms this is not possible. By the gradual evolutionary process we come to this plane, so this is the opportunity, this human form of life. By nature's law, a human body is ultimately given to you so that you can promote yourself to the spiritual life and go back home, back to Godhead.
The ultimate goal of life is Visnu. In another verse, Prahlad Maharaja will say: "People who are in this material world, enamored by the material energy, do not know what the goal of human life is." Why? They have been enchanted by the glaring external energy. They have forgotten that they are spiritual energy. This is explained later on, but here he says, "This life is an opportunity to understand the ultimate goal of perfection, Visnu." Why should we be very anxious to know Visnu, or God? Prahlad Maharaja gives a reason: "Visnu is the dearmost person. That we have forgotten." We all seek for some dear friend--everyone searches in this way. A man searches for dear friendship in woman, and woman searches for dear friendship in man. Or else a man searches in man, and woman searches in woman. Everyone searches after some dear friend, some sweet friend. Why? We want the cooperation of a dear friend who will help us. This is part of the struggle for existence, and this is natural. But we do not know that our most dear friend is Visnu, the Supreme parcel of the Supreme Lord." That is the platform of real understanding. Personality of Godhead. We are searching after some dear friend, but we do not know who this dear friend can be.
Those who have read Bhagavad-gita will find this nice verse in the Fifth Chapter: "If you make friendship with Krsna, the Supreme Lord, then you can understand perfectly that everything that exists in this world or other worlds is all the property of Krsna. He is the proprietor and enjoyer of everything." Why are you performing austerity? Why are you performing religious rituals? Why are you giving in charity? Why do you engage in righteous activities? Whatever formulas you have manufactured are meant for pleasing the Supreme Lord, and nothing more.By your ctions, by your righteous activities, when the Supreme Lord is pleased, you will get the result. If by your actions you want to gain either material happiness or spiritual happiness, if you want to live on this planet or on other planets, if you want to be a human being or you want to be a tiger, cat or dog, whatever you like you will get. Therefore He is the most sincere friend. Whatever you want from Him, you
can get. But the intelligent man does not want anything that is materially contaminated.
In Bhagavad-gita you will find that Krsna says that one can elevate oneself to the highest planet, which is known as Brahmaloka, where the duration of life is millions and millions of years. You cannot figure the duration of life there; your arithmetic will be ineffective. The statement in Bhagavad-gita is that Brahma's life is so long that 4,200,000 years make one day to him. Krsna says, "Whatever position you want, beginning from the ant right up to Brahma, you can have. But the repetition of birth and death will be there. However, if, somehow or other, by discharging Krsna consciousness in devotional service, you come to Me, then you don't have to come back again to this miserable material condition." Prahlad Maharaja said the same thing: We are searching for the most dear friend, Krsna, the Supreme Lord. Why is He the most dear friend? By nature He is dear. What is the dear most thing within yourself? Have you analyzed? You are yourself the dearmost thing. I am sitting here, but if there is a fire alarm I shall at once take care of myself: "How can I save myself?" We forget our friends and even our children: "Let me first of all save myself." Self-preservation is the first law of nature. Atma, self, in the grossest sense refers to the body. In the subtler sphere the mind is atma, and in the real sense atma means the soul. In the gross stage we are very fond of protecting the body, and in a subtler stage we are very fond of protecting the mind. But above this mental, intellectual plane, where the atmosphere is spiritualized, we can understand: "I am not this mind and not this body. Aham brahmasmi--I am a part and Prahlad Maharaja says that of all living entities, Visnu is the supreme well-wisher. Therefore we are all searching for Him. When a child cries, what does he long for? He longs for the mother. But he has no language to express this. By nature, he has his body, born of the mother's body, so there is an intimate relation with the mother's body. The child won't like any other woman. The child cries, but when the woman who is the child's mother comes and picks him up, at once he is pacified. He has no language to express all this, but the real demand is there. Similarly, we are trying to protect the body. This is self-preservation. It is a natural law of the living entity, just as eating is a natural law and sleeping is a natural law. I defend the body because within the body there is soul.
What is this soul? The soul is a part and parcel of the Supreme Lord. As we want to protect the hand or the finger because it is a part of the whole body, similarly we try to save ourselves because this is the defending process of the Supreme. The Supreme does not need defense, but this is a manifestation of our love towards Him, which is now perverted. The finger and the hand are meant to act in the interests of the whole body; as soon as I want the hand to come here, it comes, and as soon as I want the finger to play on the drum, it plays. This is the natural position. Similarly, we are searching for God, to dovetail our energy for the Supreme, but, under the spell of illusory energy, we do not know it. That is our mistake. Now, here is an opportunity, in human life. You have come to understand about Krsna consciousness, about your real goal of life, because you are human beings. I cannot invite cats and dogs to sit down here. That is the difference between cats and dogs and human beings. A human being can understand the necessity of life. If he loses the opportunity, it is a great catastrophe.
Prahlad Maharaja said, "God is the dearmost personality of all. We have to search for God." Then what about the material necessities of life? Prahlad Maharaja replies to this, "You are after sense gratification. I know that. Sense gratification is automatically achieved by contact with this body." Because a hog has a certain type of body, his sense gratification comes from eating stool, the very thing which is most obnoxious to you. At once, after evacuating, you leave to get free from the bad smell--but the hog is waiting. As soon as you evacuate, he will at once enjoy. Other animals are not attracted because one's form of pleasure-seeking is due to his particular body. There are different types of sense gratification according to different types of bodies. Therefore, Prahlad says, "My dear friends, sense gratification is achieved according to one's particular type of body." Everyone who has a material body receives sense gratification. Don't think that the hogs eating stools are unhappy. No, they are getting fat in that way. They are very happy.
Now, if a hog can achieve sense gratification, why not a human being? But that is not our achievement. That is given by nature; the facilities of a hog's body are offered by nature, and the facilities of a dog's body are also offered by nature, or God. Why should you labor for facilities which you are destined to receive anyway, by nature's law? In every form of life the bodily demands are satisfied by the arrangement of nature. This gratification is arranged, just as there is an arrangement for distress. Do you like fever? No. Why does it come? I do not know. But it does come, does it not? Yes. Did you try for it? No. So how does it come? By nature. That is the only answer. Similarly, if miseries come by nature, your happiness will also come by nature. Don't bother about it. That is the instruction of Prahlad Maharaja. If you can receive the miseries of life without effort, similarly, you can have your happiness also without effort.
Then, what is the real purpose of this human form of life? You have to cultivate Krsna consciousness. Other things will be obtained by nature's law, or God's law. Even if I don't try, whatever I am to achieve because of my past work and my particular type of body will be supplied. At any stage or in any form of life, facility is given for sense gratification. As you do not try for misery, so also happiness will take place without your control. Your real concern, therefore, should be to seek out the higher goal of human life.
